Cockroach pricing
Cockroach Pest Control Cost in Melbourne
Two jobs that share the word cockroach can be priced worlds apart. The species settles it, and once you know which one you have the quote stops looking random.

Dozens of small gel placements, not one big spray. That is where the hours go.
Ring three operators about cockroaches and you can hear three wildly different numbers, which makes the whole trade look like a lottery. It is not. A cockroach pest control cost tracks one thing more closely than anything else, and that is which cockroach is in the building. Get the species wrong and the quote is wrong, whoever gives it to you.
Melbourne kitchens deal with two populations that have almost nothing in common. One breeds outdoors and wanders in. The other lives permanently inside the cabinetry, carries its eggs around with it, and needs a staged program to finish. This page sets out how each one is priced, what pushes a figure up, and what a quote has to say in writing. Tim's figures appear in brackets until he confirms them, and the way pest control gets priced in Melbourne generally covers the rest of the pest list.
The species split
What does cockroach pest control cost come down to?
Whether you have German cockroaches or one of the large outdoor species. The big ones breed outside and are usually finished in a single visit to their entry route. German cockroaches breed inside the kitchen itself and need a staged program with a review visit, which is a different quantity of work and therefore a different kind of quote.
The giveaway is size and behaviour. Anything 30mm or longer, glossy, found in a subfloor, a drain or a garden bed and moving fast when the light goes on is an outdoor species. Anything small, pale tan with two dark stripes across the shoulders, sitting inside a cupboard in daylight, is German, and it got there in a box, a bag or a second-hand appliance.
| Which one | What the work involves | Shape of the quote |
|---|---|---|
| Large outdoor species | Entry routes, drains, subfloor and garden harbourage, plus the internal rooms they reach | One visit, from [one-off cockroach treatment from price to confirm] |
| German cockroaches | Many small gel placements through the cabinetry, dust into voids, appliance cavities, then a review | A program price covering both visits: [German cockroach program price to confirm] |
| Both at once | The outdoor route and the indoor population handled on the same attendance | Quoted together, not as two separate call-outs |
| Cafe, kitchen or food premises | Work timed around trade, a written service record, and placements an auditor will accept | Per visit on a schedule: [food premises per-visit rate to confirm] |
- German cockroach
- A small indoor-breeding cockroach, roughly 10mm to 15mm, pale tan with two dark bands behind the head. The female carries her egg case until it is nearly ready to hatch, which is precisely why one treatment cannot be the end of it.
That egg-carrying habit is the reason a credible German cockroach quote is never a single number for a single visit. Whatever is applied on day one cannot reach eggs being carried around inside a wall void. Somebody has to come back for what hatches.
Price drivers
Which details move a cockroach quote?
Five of them, and only one is about your house. How long the population has been there, how much cabinetry and how many appliances are involved, whether neighbouring units are being treated, whether a retail spray has been through it already, and whether the kitchen is domestic or trading. Each one changes the number of placements and the number of visits.
Kitchen complexity is the quiet one. A galley with four cupboards and a freestanding stove is quick. A long kitchen with a dishwasher, a built-in oven, a fridge cavity, a coffee machine and a bank of drawers has twenty separate warm, dark spaces that each need their own placement.
- Months rather than weeks. A mature population spreads out of the kitchen into bathroom cabinetry and bedside drawers, which adds rooms to the quote.
- Appliance cavities. Motor housings on fridges, dishwashers and coffee machines hold heat and moisture, and they are the hardest places to treat.
- Flats and shared walls. One treated unit between two untreated ones is a holding action rather than a result.
- Spray already used. Surface aerosol makes bait less attractive and sends survivors deeper. It is the most expensive thing people do before calling.
- Cardboard and clutter. Delivery boxes, paper bags and stacked recycling are both food and shelter, and clearing them is on you.
The flat problem deserves honesty rather than a sales pitch. If a neighbour's kitchen is feeding the population, Tim will say that before quoting and will tell you what it means, because a strata coordinated job costs more once and far less in total than three unit owners each paying separately twice.

Inclusions
What should a cockroach quote spell out before you agree?
The species identified on site, where product is going, how many visits the figure covers, what you must not wipe away afterwards, and the guarantee in writing. Nothing starts until you have seen the figure and agreed to it, and that number holds for the whole program, review visit included. No extra appears on the invoice for the second attendance.
- Species, confirmed. Written on the quote, because it is the fact that justifies the price.
- Visit count. One, or two, or a schedule. Stated, not implied.
- Placement areas. Which rooms and which cavities, so you know what has been done.
- Product name. Available in full, which matters in a kitchen more than anywhere else.
- Your part. What to clear, what to leave alone, and for how long.
- Guarantee terms. Which pest, which area, what period, in writing.
- First attendanceIdentification, gel through the cabinetry and hinge gaps, dust into the voids behind and under the units, and a treatment of the entry routes outside.
- Review attendanceTwo to three weeks later, timed for the hatch. Placements are checked, refreshed where they have been taken, and anything missed first time is dealt with.
Gel goes into small, enclosed spots rather than onto working surfaces, which is both safer and the reason the job takes time. The usual placements look like this.
Do not clean the placements off. Wiping the inside of a cupboard with disinfectant two days after the visit removes the bait the population was feeding on and sets the result back a fortnight. Wipe benches and surfaces as normal, and leave the hinges, corners and kickboard line alone until Tim has been back.
Products used on these jobs carry an APVMA registration, and the label itself decides the dose, which rooms are allowed, and the wait before anyone goes back in. In a food business that label and the service record are the two things an environmental health officer will ask about, so they are produced as part of the job rather than on request.
Doing it yourself
Does a supermarket bomb work out cheaper?
For the large outdoor species, retail products sometimes do the job. For German cockroaches they usually make it dearer. Foggers cannot reach inside an appliance housing or a wall void, they repel survivors into the next cupboard, and they leave egg cases untouched. The population comes back about three weeks later, having spread.
The mist lands on open surfaces, which is the one place these insects do not live. Worse, the residue puts them off any bait placed afterwards, so the paid treatment that follows starts with a handicap.
On a small, new German population, properly placed gel can hold it back. It fails when people put out four stations instead of thirty, or spray the same cupboards the following week.
Sealed containers, no dishes overnight, a dry sink, bins closed, cardboard out of the house. None of this clears an infestation, and all of it makes every other method work better.
Count the real spend before deciding. Thrown-out pantry stock, a replaced toaster or kettle, several rounds of aerosol, a failed rental inspection, or a food business losing a session of trade all cost more than the treatment people were trying to avoid. German cockroaches are also linked to asthma and allergy triggers in the home, which is a reason to finish the job properly rather than hold it at bay.
A cockroach you can see in daylight is not a stray. It means the dark places are already full.
Getting quoted
What does Tim need before he can price your kitchen?
A photo, a room and a rough timeline. Those three settle the species, the likely number of placements and whether one visit or a program is needed. From there Tim gives you a single figure, says how many attendances it covers, and books the review at the same time rather than leaving it to a second phone call.
Mention these when you get in touch, because each one changes the plan: whether you have seen them in daylight, whether they are in the bathroom as well as the kitchen, whether this is a unit with shared walls, what you have already sprayed, and whether anyone in the home has asthma. Where a child or a pet changes the placement strategy, Tim will say so rather than treat and hope.
How the treatment runs

Questions
Cockroach pricing questions
Why does one cockroach quote cost double another?
Usually because one is for a single visit to an outdoor species and the other is a staged program for German cockroaches. Ask each operator to name the species on the quote and to state how many attendances the figure covers. Once both answers are in writing the difference stops looking unreasonable.
Is the review visit part of the price?
On a German cockroach program it has to be, because egg cases carried through the first treatment hatch afterwards. Tim quotes the program with both attendances inside one figure. Where an extra visit is wanted beyond that, it is priced separately and noted as [additional review visit price to confirm].
Can I just use bombs and sprays instead?
For the big outdoor cockroaches, retail products often help. For the small indoor ones they tend to scatter the population and spoil the bait that a technician would otherwise use, so the job you end up paying for is larger. Cleaning up food and moisture, though, always helps.
