Primary Schools Around St Ives

There are six primary schools St Ives families can choose from within the suburb itself: three public schools, one Catholic school and two independent schools. This guide sets out who they are, how public school catchments work locally, when each sector runs orientation, and which schools have before and after school care on site.

Public

The local public schools and catchments

St Ives has three NSW public primary schools: St Ives Public School in Horace Street, St Ives North Public School in Memorial Avenue, and St Ives Park Public School near Woodbury and Acron Roads. Each has a local enrolment area. According to the NSW School Finder, our Killeaton Street address falls in the St Ives North Public School area.

Your local public school depends on your home address, not ours, and boundaries do not always follow the obvious nearest school. Enter it in the department's School Finder.

School Finder notes extra intake-area information for some schools that may affect enrolment, so read the details for your address.

Beyond public

Catholic and independent options

Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School on Link Road is St Ives' Catholic primary. The suburb also has two independent schools: Masada College, a school running from preschool to Year 12, also on Link Road, and the St Ives Preparatory campus of Sydney Grammar School on Ayres Road. Each sets its own fees and enrolment process.

Catholic and independent schools do not use catchments in the same way as public schools.

Some independent schools take applications years ahead of entry.

Visit each school's website, or attend an open day, to see its enrolment timeline and fees.

Many families on the Upper North Shore also look at schools in nearby suburbs such as Gordon, Pymble and Turramurra, especially if work or grandparents are in that direction.

Deciding

How the choice tends to play out locally

For most families, the decision starts with the local public school, then weighs up whether a Catholic or independent school suits their child better. Practical factors often decide it in the end: travel time, before and after school care, siblings, cost, and where friends are going. There is rarely a single right answer.

Walking distance matters more than many parents expect, especially for drop-off on busy mornings. Killeaton Street, Memorial Avenue and Mona Vale Road can all be slow at school times, so a trial run at 8:30am is worth doing.

Friendships from preschool can make the first term easier if children go to the same school.

Independent school applications can close early, so families keeping options open often apply before they have fully decided.

Our guide to choosing a primary school covers the decision in depth.

Timing

Orientation timelines for each sector

NSW public schools usually hold Kindergarten orientation late in the year before school starts, and many add a string of weekly transition sessions from about mid-year. Catholic and independent schools set their own timelines, which can start earlier, so check with each school once your enrolment is confirmed.

  1. Years ahead

    Independent applications

Some independent schools open waitlists years before entry.

  2. Year before

    Public and Catholic enrolment

Families enrol early in the year before school, depending on the school.

  3. Second half

    Transition programs

Many public schools run weekly transition sessions.

  4. Term 4

    Orientation

Most schools hold orientation days before the year ends.

What happens at orientation is covered in our guide to Kindergarten orientation in NSW.

Care

Before and after school care at each

Four St Ives primary schools publish details of before and after school care. St Ives North and St Ives Public both have on-site care run by Primary OSHCare, and Corpus Christi has on-site care run by Catholic Care. St Ives Park's website names Young Giants as its care provider. Check hours and availability directly, as places fill.

At Lead

How our School Readiness Program prepares children for all of them

Our School Readiness Program prepares children for any school, public, Catholic or independent. It builds independence, confidence, early literacy and numeracy, and the social skills every Kindergarten classroom needs. Educators liaise with local schools as children move on, and prepare a transition statement for the school you choose.

We do not coach children for specific school entry tests or interviews.

Digital literacy and numeracy programs and a Prep School workbook come with the daily fee.

Read about the School Readiness Program, or ring (02) 7238 8668 with your questions about the year before school.
