Modular Office / Link and Stack

Modular office buildings Australia link and stack glass pods

A modular office is a workspace system built from individual units that connect together. The Portable Pod is a 6m x 3m modular unit that can be used as a standalone 18m² office or linked side by side to create 36m², stacked vertically for two-storey builds, or arranged in L and U configurations for larger teams. Each unit ships flat-pack and assembles in 6 days. From $18,500 per module plus transport.

Start with one pod. Expand to four when your team grows. No demolition, no rebuilding. Add a module and connect it to what you already have.

01 / Definition

What is a modular office?

A modular office is a workspace built from repeating structural units that connect together. Each unit is fully functional on its own and gains additional capability when linked to adjacent units. The modular approach means you can scale the office footprint by adding modules rather than undertaking a full rebuild.

Most portable office competitors in Australia sell standalone units only. The Portable Pod is designed from the start for linking and stacking, which opens up larger commercial configurations that a single-unit product cannot deliver.

02 / Configurations

Modular office configurations 1, 2, 4, 6 pods.

Every configuration below starts from a standard 6x3m pod. Expansion is additive, so you can start small and scale without rebuilding.

Config 01 / Single

One pod, 18m²

The standard starting point. One open-plan office with full kit inclusions: glass, insulation, smart lighting, power, and floor. Ideal for solo operators, consultants, and home offices.

Config 02 / Linked

Two pods linked, 36m²

Two pods placed side by side with a structural link and optional internal opening between them. Creates a 12 x 3m footprint suitable for small teams of three to six people or a studio-and-meeting-room layout.

Config 03 / Stacked

Two pods stacked, 36m² two storeys

One pod on top of another on a 6 x 3m footprint. A structural stair connects the two levels. Ideal for narrow blocks and sites where ground footprint is limited but vertical space is available.

Config 04 / Multi-module

Four to six pods, 72m to 108m²

Larger commercial builds with L-shape, U-shape, or courtyard configurations. Used by small businesses, NDIS providers, allied health practices, and education providers. Quoted individually based on site and layout.

03 / Use Cases

Modular office use cases growing teams, multi-function.

Modular configurations open up applications that a single portable unit cannot serve.

01

Growing team office

Start with one pod for two people. Add a second when the team grows. The linked configuration gives 36m² without rebuilding or relocating the first pod.

02

Reception and consulting

Front pod as a waiting room, back pod as a treatment or consulting room. An internal door between the two maintains privacy while keeping the layout intact.

03

Studio and meeting room

Creative agencies, architecture practices, and design studios use a linked configuration for one open studio and one closed meeting room with glass between them.

04

NDIS and allied health

Multiple consulting rooms in a single modular footprint, with shared entry and administration. Particularly effective for sole practitioners who need one professional and one private space.

05

Site administration

Construction projects and rural operations use linked pods as on-site offices, plan rooms, and staff amenities. Crane-truck delivery handles remote access.

06

Education and training

Small training rooms, tutoring centres, and learning pods. Two linked units give enough space for a classroom of eight to ten, with a break-out room alongside.

04 / Comparison

Modular office vs site-built office cost and time.

A site-built commercial office extension of equivalent size typically costs five to ten times more than a modular pod configuration and takes months longer to complete.

05 / Installation

Modular office installation process.

From deposit to first day in the office. Multi-module configurations take one to two extra weeks of fabrication over a single pod.

01

Deposit and layout sign-off

Configuration confirmed, site access reviewed, layout drawing approved. Fabrication slot booked within the week.

02

Workshop fabrication

Each module built and tested at our Sunshine Coast workshop. Multi-module orders fabricated in parallel where possible. Photos provided at completion.

03

Crane-truck delivery

All modules delivered in one or two crane-truck loads depending on configuration. Components staged in assembly order on your prepared pad.

04

Assembly and linking

Each module assembled, then structurally linked and internally connected. Internal openings between pods fitted as specified. Electrical connected by licensed trades.

07 / FAQ

Modular office questions.

Common questions from buyers planning a modular office build.

  • A modular office is a workspace built from individual units that connect together. The Portable Pod is a 6x3m modular unit usable standalone or linked into larger configurations. Two pods linked side by side give 36m²; two pods stacked give two storeys on a 6x3m footprint.
  • Pods are placed side by side on a shared prepared pad and connected with a structural link kit. An internal opening between pods can be specified before fabrication, creating a doorway between the two spaces. The external join is weathersealed. Linked pods share power and data routing through the panel system.
  • Yes. Adding a second pod to an existing single pod is possible as long as the site has space and the original pod was positioned to allow expansion. The existing pod does not need to be disassembled. We review the existing site layout and quote the second module as an addition. Lead time for an addition is the same as a new pod: 6 to 8 weeks from deposit.
  • A single pod takes 6 to 8 weeks from deposit to delivery. A two-pod linked or stacked configuration adds one to two weeks of fabrication time. Four and six pod configurations are built to a timeline confirmed at quote, typically 10 to 14 weeks. Assembly on-site takes 6 days per two pods.
  • A single pod used as a non-habitable office often qualifies as exempt development in many council zones. Linked configurations at 36m² may require a complying development certificate or DA depending on your state and zone. Commercial and multi-pod configurations typically require formal council approval. We supply technical documentation and a council inquiry template to support your application.
