The Backyard Office Trend in Australia
The shift to working from home was not a fad. Australian Bureau of Statistics data consistently shows that a significant portion of the workforce continues to work remotely at least part of the week. What has changed is the expectation: a laptop on the kitchen table is no longer acceptable as a long-term setup.
Backyard office pods have emerged as the practical answer for homeowners who need professional workspace without moving house, building a costly extension, or commuting to a shared office. The backyard becomes productive. The house stays as a home.
Demand in QLD, NSW, and VIC has risen sharply since 2022, with building product and design-conscious buyers now treating the backyard pod as a home improvement investment, not just a convenience purchase.
The Real Difference
Why a Backyard Pod Beats a Garden Shed
People sometimes compare pods to high-end garden sheds. They are not in the same category. The structural standard, the glazing, the insulation, and the intended use are entirely different.
A garden shed
- Steel or Colorbond cladding, single skin
- Minimal or no insulation
- No glazing, or small fixed windows only
- Hot in summer, cold in winter
- Not designed for full-time occupation
- Low resale or added-value contribution
- Cheap to buy, uncomfortable to use professionally
A Portable Pods backyard office
- SIP panel walls with continuous insulation
- Floor-to-ceiling double-glazed glass walls
- Comfortable year-round with minimal HVAC
- Engineered to Australian building standards
- Adds value to the property as a structure
- Professional appearance for client visits
- Pre-routed for power and data connection
What You Receive
What Our Backyard Office Pod Includes
Every pod is supplied as a complete flat-pack kit, installed by our crew. The following is included in the base price.
Full floor area
6 × 3m clear span. No internal posts or obstructions. Arrange the space exactly as your workflow requires.
Insulated walls and roof
Structural Insulated Panel construction. R-value far above minimum code requirements. Your air conditioner will not have to work hard.
Double-glazed panels
Two full glass walls with double-glazed units. Natural light without heat gain in summer, or heat loss in winter.
Installation included
Our installation team assembles the full structure on site. No builder needed. No sub-contracting. Six days start to finish.
Engineering certificate
Structural engineering report for council or insurance purposes. Not a shed. A certified structure.
Pre-routed conduit
Electrical and data conduit is already installed within the wall cavity. Your electrician connects at the pod, not through it.
Layouts & Gallery
Backyard Office Designs & Layouts
The pod ships in a single configuration but sets up in a range of orientations depending on your site. Linking two pods side by side doubles the floor area. Stacking creates a two-level structure where the site permits.
Connections
Power, Water & Internet to Your Backyard
The pod needs three connections to become a fully functional workspace. Each is straightforward for a licensed trades person to complete.
Power
A licensed electrician runs a cable from your main switchboard to the pod's pre-routed conduit. Most residential runs cost $800 to $1,800. Budget for three to four double GPOs, a single-phase air con circuit, and two RCDs.
Internet
Underground Cat6 in conduit is the cleanest solution, your electrician can install it in the same trench as the power cable. Above-ground options include weatherproof clip-on cable or a mesh Wi-Fi extender. For video calls and cloud work, wired is strongly recommended.
Water (optional)
Most backyard office pods do not require plumbing. However, if you want a small sink or kitchenette, a licensed plumber can extend the house supply. Adding a small bathroom or toilet requires a drainage connection and is typically a separate council consideration.
Climate control
A 2.5kW reverse-cycle split-system handles 18sqm in most Australian climates. Installation by a licensed refrigeration mechanic typically costs $600 to $1,200 depending on location and head unit selection.
Permits & Approvals
Council Approval Across States
Australian exempt development codes differ by state and by individual council. As a guide, most QLD and NSW councils allow an 18sqm ancillary structure as exempt or complying development, provided standard setbacks and site coverage limits are met.
VIC councils typically have a lower exempt threshold, around 10sqm, so a building permit application may be required. SA private certification is available for most residential ancillary structures. WA requires a local council check. ACT generally requires a development application for structures of this size.
Our full state-by-state council approval guide walks through the key requirements for each jurisdiction. We recommend confirming with your own council before placing an order.
- QLD: Exempt if under 10m and setbacks are met
- NSW: Complying development under 20sqm on residential land
- VIC: Building permit likely required for 18sqm
- SA: Private certification pathway available
- WA: Local council check required
- ACT: DA typically required
- TAS: Exempt under certain conditions, check with council
We provide a structural engineering certificate with every pod. This document supports any council or permit application you need to make.
Financial Considerations
Backyard Office Tax Considerations
A backyard office pod used exclusively for business may be treated differently from a general home improvement under ATO rules. The key principle is exclusive use: if the pod is your workspace and nothing else, it supports a depreciation claim over the effective life of the asset.
Home-based sole traders, consultants, and business owners are the most common category of buyer who explore this. The pod is a discrete, lockable, separately metered structure, which simplifies the documentation of exclusive business use compared to a room inside the house.
