Direct answer

What is remedial massage?

A common question — and a useful one to answer cleanly before going further. What is a remedial massage, really, and why does it sit in its own category?

Remedial massage is a therapeutic discipline that uses targeted techniques — deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, assisted stretching, joint mobilisation — to assess and treat specific musculoskeletal problems. Where a relaxation massage is about wellbeing, remedial is about resolution: identifying what's actually going on in your body, then applying the right techniques to address it.

In plain terms

Remedial massage is therapeutic bodywork by a qualified practitioner who assesses your specific issue and uses targeted techniques to treat it — not just a generic full-body rub.

In Australia, the modality is regulated. To call yourself a qualified remedial massage therapist requires formal training — typically a Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT52015) — and ongoing accreditation through a body like ANTA. Those credentials are what unlocks private health fund rebates and signals that the practitioner is properly trained in both technique and clinical assessment.

My qualifications.

The remedial massage therapist title isn't self-awarded — it requires accredited training plus ongoing professional registration. Here's what I hold and why it matters for your session.

Diploma + ANTA registered — the gold-standard pairing.

I hold a Diploma of Remedial Massage (HLT52015) through Demi International — the nationally recognised qualification covering anatomy, pathology, clinical assessment, and the full toolkit of remedial techniques.

I'm also a fully accredited member of ANTA — the Australian Natural Therapists Association — Australia's longest-standing peak body for natural therapists, with ongoing CPD, ethical practice, and insurance requirements built in. Together, the Diploma plus ANTA membership is what makes my sessions claimable through every major private health fund and gives you a guaranteed baseline of professional competence.

Your first time

What to expect in your first session.

A remedial session isn't quite like a spa massage. Here's the rhythm of a first appointment so you know what you're walking into.

i

Intake & assessment

5–10 minutes discussing what's bringing you in, your medical history, and any specific areas of concern. I'll often do a simple postural and movement assessment to inform the treatment plan.

ii

Treatment

The bulk of the session — typically 45–80 minutes of hands-on work using the techniques chosen for your assessment. Pressure is checked throughout; you're in control at every step.

iii

Aftercare advice

5 minutes at the end discussing what we found, what to expect over the next few days, and any simple home care (stretches, hydration, movement) that will reinforce the work.

iv

Receipt & rebate

A receipt with my full ANTA provider details lands in your inbox — submit it through your private health fund's app to claim your rebate, usually within 1–3 business days.

Common questions

Remedial massage FAQ.

How is remedial massage different from deep tissue?

Deep tissue is a technique — using slow, sustained pressure to reach deeper muscle layers. Remedial massage is a discipline that uses deep tissue alongside other techniques (trigger point, myofascial release, stretching, mobilisation) to assess and treat a specific musculoskeletal issue. In short: deep tissue is a tool. Remedial is the trained, diagnostic approach using it. More detail in this comparison.

Will remedial massage hurt?

It can be intense, but it shouldn't be unbearably painful. Effective remedial work produces a productive "hurts so good" sensation rather than damaging pain. Pressure is checked throughout the session and you can ask me to lighten up at any time. Some tenderness in worked areas for a day or two is normal; sharp pain during a session is not — that's a sign to back off and try a different angle.

How long does a remedial massage session take?

Sessions run 60 minutes ($120), 75 minutes ($150), 90 minutes ($165), or 120 minutes ($205). For a first session or complex issues, 75–90 minutes is usually right — it allows time for a thorough assessment plus enough hands-on work to make real progress. Block out roughly 90 minutes total for a 60-minute session to allow for arrival, consultation, and aftercare.

Can I claim my remedial massage session on private health insurance?

Yes — as an ANTA-registered remedial massage therapist, my sessions are claimable through every major Australian private health fund with extras cover, including Bupa, Medibank, HCF, NIB, AHM and others. Typical rebates land between $40–$80 per session depending on your level of cover. After your session I provide a receipt with my ANTA provider details — submit through your fund's app to claim.
