Full sun does most of the work for you.

Sensible flea control for yard areas starts with a correction: your lawn is almost certainly not the problem. Flea grubs have no hard shell and no way to hold water, so an hour of direct Melbourne summer sun on open mown grass finishes them. The population outdoors survives in the handful of places that stay shaded and slightly damp, and those places are usually small enough to walk to in under a minute.

That makes the outdoor part of a flea job a search before it is anything else. Find the four or five spots that qualify, deal with those, and you have done nearly all of what is available outside. Spread product evenly over a quarter-acre block and you will spend more and achieve less. Tim keeps this with his other guides on household pests because most people only think about the yard after the house has been done twice.

As on every flea page here, the animal itself is not part of this. Vets dose cats and dogs; pest technicians treat property.

The search

Where does flea control for yard areas actually need to go?

Into the shaded, sheltered ground where an animal chooses to lie down. That means under decking and steps, beneath the house where the subfloor is open, along a south-facing fence, under dense shrubs, inside and around a kennel, and the worn hollow in the dirt that every dog digs for itself. Those spots stay cool and slightly damp, which is what the grubs need.

Work out where the animal spends its day and you have the map. Dogs are creatures of habit outdoors: the same patch beside the shed in the morning, the same strip of verandah by lunchtime, the same hollow under the hedge in the afternoon. Eggs drop at each of those stops, so the density follows the routine rather than spreading evenly.

Highest

Under cover

Decking, verandah boards, the gap under a bottom step, an open subfloor. Shaded, dry at the surface, damp underneath, never disturbed.

High

Resting spots

Kennels, the mat by the back door, a dirt hollow under a shrub, the bedding in a shed or garage.

Low

Open lawn

Mown, sunlit and dry at ground level for most of a summer day. Rarely worth treating and often treated anyway.

Cats change the shape of the search, because their routine is vertical and nocturnal rather than fixed. A cat that sleeps on a shed roof, in a pile of timber, on top of a woodheap or inside an open subfloor leaves eggs in places nobody would think to check, and the cat that does this is frequently not yours.

That brings in the awkward part of the outdoor picture. Strays, feral cats, possums and rats shelter in the same shaded cavities, and they keep delivering fresh eggs to a property that has been cleared. A subfloor with a broken vent, a gap under a deck, a shed door that never shuts properly and an unsealed roof access are all open invitations. If the biting restarts a month after a successful job, look for a resident rather than for a failure of the treatment.

<circle cx="12" cy="12" r="9"/>
A quick field test. Pull on long white socks over your shoes and walk slowly through each suspect area, pausing for ten seconds in the worst of the shade. Adults jump at a moving dark shape and show up clearly against white. It is crude, it is free, and it narrows a whole yard to two or three spots in about ten minutes.

The cool strip at the base of a wall holds moisture long after the lawn has dried out.

The work

How do you deal with kennels, decking and the ground underneath?

Strip out the bedding and the loose debris first, then treat the bare shaded ground and let it dry before anything goes back. Leaf litter, bark chips, sand and old straw are both the nursery and the shield, so a product applied over the top of them never reaches the soil surface where the grubs actually sit.

Empty it outBedding, blankets, straw and cushions out of the kennel. Hot wash what can be washed, bin what cannot.

Rake it backClear leaf litter, loose bark and built-up debris from the shaded strips and from under the deck where you can reach.

Treat the ground, not the lawnThe bare soil, the kennel floor and walls, the shaded fence line, the cool strip at the base of walls.

Keep animals off until dryThen return clean, dry bedding, and repeat the clear-out weekly while the job runs.

Mulch is worth a paragraph of its own because gardeners hate hearing it. Thick bark mulch in a shaded bed holds moisture beautifully, which is exactly what the plants want and exactly what the grubs want. You do not have to remove it everywhere. Pull it back from the strips an animal uses and from the base of the walls, and leave the rest.

Under decking is the hardest part of any yard and the most rewarding. If there is a removable board, a service hatch or a lattice panel, open it. If there is not, access is limited to the perimeter and the honest answer is that coverage will be partial. Blocking the entry so cats and possums cannot get under there in the first place does more long-term good than any product applied through a gap.

Watch what else is in the yard. Vegetable beds, fruit trees, fish ponds, frog habitat, chooks and beehives all change where a product can legally go. Label directions set the places and rates, and a technician who is told about them before the day can work around them. One who finds out on arrival usually has to leave part of the yard untreated.

Timing matters too. Treating shaded soil on the morning of a wet week is money poured away, and so is treating a strip you are about to hose down or irrigate daily. Give the ground a dry run of a day or two either side if the forecast allows it.

Rated honestly

Do nematodes and the natural yard remedies work?

Beneficial nematodes have genuine evidence behind them and they are fussy to use. Keep the pack cold until use, check the date, mix and apply the same day, water the area before and after, choose an overcast afternoon or dusk, and put them where the soil already holds moisture. Thrown dry onto a sunny lawn at midday they achieve nothing at all, which is how most of the disappointed reviews get written.

The best free improvement is still structural. Prune a shrub up off the ground, thin a hedge so light reaches the soil, lift a woodpile onto a rack, move the kennel out from under the tree, and fix the dripping tap that keeps one corner permanently damp. Every one of those shrinks the habitat permanently rather than for a few weeks.

<details class="fold">
Is a treated yard safe for the dog?

Once the treated ground has dried, and you will be told how long that takes before anyone packs up. Shaded soil, the underside of decking where there is access, the kennel and its surrounds, the base of fences and the strip against the house are treated as separate targets at their own rates, and the residual stays in place through the fortnight while the remaining cocoons open. Honest limits come with it: nobody can treat a neighbour's yard, and nobody should promise a sealed result on a block that backs onto a reserve.

Tim covers Melbourne and the surrounding suburbs on his own, carrying full insurance and Victorian pest control licence No. 86488, and he puts a 3-month re-treatment guarantee behind covered outdoor work.
