A herb bed is a pleasant thing to own and it will not influence where a queen builds. Where planting does matter is the opposite way around: dense shrubs against a wall give her exactly the sheltered, hidden position she wants, so a thinned hedge and a trimmed gap between foliage and brickwork is worth more than any repellent species.<\/p><\/div><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"sec dark\" aria-labelledby=\"sealing\">\n<div class=\"wrap\"><div class=\"shead\"><p class=eyebrow>The spring job<\/p><h2 id=\"sealing\">How to deter wasps from nesting: which gaps should you close?<\/h2><\/div><p class=\"ans\"><b>Anything dry, sheltered and hollow that opens to the outside.<\/b> That means roof and subfloor vents, gaps where cladding meets a frame, lifted or broken roof tiles, open ends on hollow rails and gate posts, shutter boxes, meter box lids that no longer sit flat, and the space under decking. Close them in late winter and the search in spring comes up empty.<\/p><div class=\"prose\"><p>Timing is the part people get wrong. Doing this work in January means closing cavities that may already have something living in them, which turns a simple job into a problem. The window that works runs through the back of winter and the first weeks of spring, before queens are out assessing sites and while anything from last season is empty.<\/p>\n<ol class=\"steps\">\n <li><b>Walk the eaves with a torch<\/b><span>Both long elevations, the carport, the shed and the pergola.
