A European wasp nest is not a householder job, and the reasons are mechanical rather than dramatic: you cannot see the colony, you cannot reach it, and the one opening into it is the spot you would have to stand beside.

This guide covers what sets the species apart from everything else flying around the yard, where the nests actually end up, why home attempts keep producing the same outcome, and who to report one to when it is not on your land. It belongs with Tim's written pest guides and assumes you have already noticed wasps and want to know what the next move is.

Know the insect

What makes a European wasp different from everything else in the yard?

Two things: it eats what you eat, and it keeps its home out of sight. No native wasp works a barbecue plate, a bin lid or an open drink can the way this one does, and no native wasp runs a colony of tens of thousands behind a hole in your lawn. Those habits are the species identification before anybody looks at markings.

It is an introduced insect and a recent arrival. Agriculture Victoria records the first Australian sighting in Tasmania in 1959, most likely a hibernating queen that travelled in cargo, with the species reaching the southern mainland through the 1970s. Melbourne's first sighting was in 1977, and within about five years it had spread across most of the greater metropolitan area. It is now so widespread in Victoria that it counts as naturalised and is no longer a notifiable pest.

On the markings, workers run roughly 12 to 16mm long, with queens and males larger again. The body is bright yellow with black markings shaped like small triangles, the legs are yellow, and the antennae are solid black. The wings fold flat along the back at rest. In the air it is fast and direct, legs tucked in, and it does not hover.

Three insects people confuse, separated by features you can see from several metres back.

Feature

European wasp

Honey bee

Paper wasp

Leg colour

Yellow

Black

Usually dark, and trailing in flight

Antennae

Solid black

Short and dark

Orange-brown

Flight

Fast, straight, no hovering

Steady, often loaded with pollen

Slow and drifting, often hovering

Interest in food

Meat, sweet drinks, fruit, bins

None

Little to none

Sting

Repeatable, and recruits help

Once, then the bee dies

Repeatable, defensive only

The scavenging is also what makes them a safety problem indoors and out. A wasp that climbs into an open can is the reason stings inside the mouth happen at all, which is why the standard advice at a Melbourne barbecue is to pour drinks into a glass or use a straw, keep food covered, and look before you swallow.

Finding it

Where is a European wasp nest likely to be hiding?

Below ground or inside a structure, which is why so many households are certain there is no nest on the property. Agriculture Victoria puts about 80 per cent of nests in or beside the ground: tree bases, hedge lines, rockeries, retaining walls, under compost heaps and inside dumped rubbish. The rest go into roof spaces, wall cavities and sheltered spots on buildings.

From outside, none of that is visible. What you get is a small permanent opening with insects using it in both directions at once, busiest through the warm part of the day. If something ever does expose one, the structure is a layered grey ball that can reach the size of a basketball and beyond.

Distance is the detail that catches people out. A worker will travel a fair way from home to feed, so the wasps crowding your bin may belong to a colony on a block two streets over. Two neighbours can both have a wasp problem while only one of them has a nest, and treating the yard rather than finding the opening achieves nothing at all.

Use the food they already wantLeave a scrap uncovered on an outdoor table, then stand six or seven metres off and let them find it.

Read the departureA wasp leaving loaded climbs and holds one bearing. Note which fence it crosses and at what height.

Shift along that lineCarry the scrap thirty paces that way and watch again. Three moves usually finishes at the opening.

Stop there. Finding the entry is useful and standing over it is not, and the handover point is the moment you can say where it is. A nest located but untouched is the easiest possible job for whoever treats it.

<circle cx="12" cy="12" r="9"/>
The winter myth. A northern hemisphere winter wipes out the workforce and leaves a single queen to begin again from nothing. Victorian winters are mild enough that a complete colony can survive and keep building the next season, carrying a stock of new queens with it, which is how some nests reach a size no first-year nest ever would. A nest found in winter is not a dead nest, and it should be left alone rather than investigated.

Lawns, banks, rockeries and retaining walls account for most of them.

The honest reason

Why does treating one of these yourself go wrong?

Because every route to the colony runs through one opening, and you would be standing at it. Whatever you aim at the opening wets the doorway and a few wasps standing in it. The brood, the queen and the bulk of the workforce are untouched, and the response comes out through the one exit available, which is a hand's width from where you are standing.

Numbers are the second half of it. These colonies get very large by the back end of summer, and a disturbance at the entry does not produce one annoyed insect. A wasp that feels the nest is under threat releases a chemical signal that brings others straight out, so the realistic outcome of a home attempt is several stings in a few seconds rather than a near miss.

There is also no useful target for a product you can buy. With an open comb you can see what you are treating. Here the nest might be a metre down in clay, or three metres along a cavity behind brickwork, and nothing sprayed at the opening travels that far. Killing the foragers in the air is worse than useless, because the queen is already replacing them from brood that hatched this week.

<circle cx="12" cy="12" r="9"/>
Vibration finds them first

Most ground nest stings happen mid-job: a mower, a line trimmer, a spade into a bank or a compost bin being turned. Wasps caught away from home when the temperature drops shelter under bark, in leaf litter, in woodpiles and in stacked building materials, so gloves are worth wearing through autumn, winter and early spring when handling that sort of material. It is a small habit that prevents a surprising number of stings.

If the thought behind the attempt is cost, the arithmetic rarely holds. A failed effort buys a can, an agitated colony that still needs treating, and sometimes a trip to a medical centre. The product testing behind that claim is set out in the honest look at what wasp spray can do.

Whose job is it

Who do you report a nest to, and what happens then?

It depends entirely on whose land the opening sits on. On your own property it is yours to arrange. On a neighbour's it is theirs to arrange, and a quiet word over the fence beats anything formal. On a nature strip, in a park or inside public infrastructure it belongs to whoever owns that asset, so reporting it is free where paying for it would not be.

Councils across Melbourne publish contact details for exactly these situations, usually covering nests on council land, nests in power poles, which go to the electricity distributor, and nests in telecommunications pits, which go to the faults line of the company that owns the pit. A licensed operator confirms the species, finds the active opening, suits up, and puts an insecticidal dust into the entry so that arriving workers walk through it and take it below, down to where the grubs and the queen are. The opening stays open on purpose, since the wasps have to keep using it for the next day or so. State health guidance is straightforward on this point: destroying the nest is the only thing that controls the colony, and it is work for somebody licensed.

Victorian licences are issued under state public health law and the holders are listed publicly, so you can look an operator's number up before they come through the gate.
