A rat is a large, careful animal with a fixed route through your property and a long memory for the things that were not there yesterday. Rush it and you teach it to stay away from the one thing you wanted it to touch.

What follows is the whole sequence a householder can carry out: proving the animal is a rat rather than a mouse, finding the road it uses every night, choosing and setting traps that get approached instead of avoided, understanding what changed about rat bait in 2026, and closing the building afterwards with materials that hold. It is one of Tim's pest control guides, written for people doing the work themselves.

Expect this to take two to three weeks rather than a weekend. That is not a failure of the method, it is the method. The pages that promise an overnight result are describing mice.

Name it first

Before you decide how to get rid of a rat, is it actually a rat?

Hole size settles it in a few seconds. Victorian health guidance puts a mouse hole at up to roughly 20 mm across and a rat hole at around 80 mm. Add the dropping length, the weight of the sound overhead and whether there are smears on the timber, and you have your answer before you spend a cent on gear.

It matters because every decision after this one changes. A rat needs a bigger trap with a stronger bar, placed in fewer spots and left alone for days. A mouse needs many small placements and gives you a result in a night or two. Buy the wrong gear and you will spend a fortnight proving nothing.

Runway

The fixed path a rat uses between its nest and its food, usually hard against a wall, a beam, a fence capping or a pipe. Rats repeat it so exactly that body oil and dust build into a visible dark smear along the surface.

The three species that matter in Victoria are the Norway rat, the roof rat and the house mouse. Height is the quickest separator between the two rats: anything in a ceiling, along the top of a wall or up a tree against the house is roof rat behaviour, while holes in soil beside the footings, under a shed floor or along a drain line belong to the Norway rat.

Droppings the length of an olive pip, in a few heavy groups, say rat. Grain-of-rice pellets scattered everywhere say mouse.

A sound with weight to it, moving slowly across a ceiling, says rat. Fast, light scratching inside a wall at head height says mouse.

Dark greasy marks along a skirting, a joist or a pipe say rat, because a mouse rarely leaves enough oil to show.

Chewed hard plastic, a damaged water line or a gnawed timber edge widened over weeks says rat.

One Melbourne seasonal note worth holding on to. The first complaints arrive as the nights cool through autumn and vacant blocks get slashed, which pushes animals off open ground and towards buildings. Heavy rain does the same thing faster by flooding burrows and drains, so a wet week in winter often produces a sudden run of calls.

A hole you could post a golf ball into, beside a wall, is rat work rather than mouse work.

Trapping

Which rat traps work, and how do you set them so they get used?

A heavy-duty snap trap, placed on a proven runway and left unset and baited for three or four nights before you arm it, outperforms anything else a householder can buy. The pre-baiting step is what people skip, and it is the step that decides the outcome, because a rat treats a new object in its own territory as a hazard for days.

Rats are wary of anything that appears in ground they know well. Biologists call it neophobia, and it is the single trait that separates a rat job from a mouse job. A trap dropped on a runway tonight may be walked around for the better part of a week. Use whatever they are already eating on your property: dog biscuit, a smear of peanut butter pressed into the trigger, bacon rind, a dried fruit, birdseed if the aviary is the draw. Tie or wire the food to the trigger so the animal has to work at it rather than lifting it clean off.

Placement beats everything else. Traps go flat against a wall with the trigger end towards it, behind the fridge rather than in front of it, along the top plate in a roof space, beside a burrow mouth in a garden bed, under decking at the entry point. An open floor is wasted ground, because a rat crosses the middle of a room only when it has no choice.

<circle cx="12" cy="12" r="9"/>
A cheap way to prove where they walk: sift a light dusting of plain flour or talc across a suspected run, leave it overnight and look in the morning. On 10 March 2026 the regulator certified that it is in the public interest for products containing these actives to be declared restricted chemical products, which would limit who can buy them. That certification still has to be accepted by the Commonwealth agriculture department, so it is a direction of travel rather than a rule already in force.

The actives caught by the suspension are brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum, difethialone and flocoumafen. If it dents, a rat will be through it, and that rules out foam, silicone, plastic and soft timber on their own.

The materials that hold are dull and cheap: galvanised or stainless mesh, sheet metal plates over chewed edges, mortar at a brick opening, vented covers made for weep holes, and a new brush strip under a door. Foam still has a role, holding mesh in position and stopping draughts, but it is never the thing doing the work.

Sequence is the part people get backwards. Closing everything while the animals are still inside leaves them shut in with you, chewing a fresh way out somewhere less convenient or dying where nobody can reach them. Knock the numbers down first, keep one busy route open and under watch, then shut it once the traps have gone quiet for several nights running.

Branches and climbers that come within half a metre of a gutter are a bridge over everything you did at ground level.

Chook pens are the strongest draw in any backyard: grain, water, warmth and cover together. Clay house drains with mortar joints crack with age and root pressure, and a broken section or a disused stub gives a sheltered road from the sewer to the ground under a slab. The roof void and the subfloor get entered and read, placements go where the evidence says rather than where you can reach, every opening is written down, and the sealing happens in the right order at the end. Tim attends every job himself, so the person who finds the gap is the person who comes back to check it.

His Victorian pest control licence is No. 86488, a number listed on the public register for anyone who wants to look before they book, and he is fully insured. Treatments he covers carry a guarantee of three months, so a return of the same pest to ground he has already treated inside that period brings him back for nothing. Melbourne and the surrounding suburbs are his patch.

The page on rat control in Melbourne sets out how a visit runs, what the roof void and subfloor work involves and what moves the price, or you can send the details through with a photo of the droppings beside a coin. If the noise is overhead rather than at ground level, start with the guide on rats in a roof space, and if you are still not certain what you are dealing with, the rodent nest signs walk-through goes through the evidence one sign at a time.

Questions

Rat questions people ask before they call anyone

<details class="fold">
What is the best rat trap?

A heavy snap trap, wired down on a runway and left unset and baited for three or four nights first.
