That is exactly the right question, because the answer changes what you should do next, and it can usually be settled in twenty minutes with a torch and a bit of patience.

This page is a reading guide rather than a treatment plan. It covers what the droppings tell you and how they differ between species, what an egg case looks like and where they get stuck, the smear marks and cast skins people walk past daily, what the smell means, and why seeing one in daylight is a more serious finding than seeing three at midnight. The treatment side is covered in Tim's guides to the pests he treats.

One warning before you start. What you find may be unpleasant, and none of it says anything about how clean your house is. The species that causes the most trouble indoors arrives in boxes, appliances and shared walls, and it does very well in spotless kitchens.

The evidence

What are the signs of cockroach infestation people notice first?

Droppings in cupboard corners and hinge pockets, dark smear marks along humid surfaces, empty purse-shaped egg cases wedged into gaps, pale cast skins, and a flat oily smell in a bad cupboard. Live sightings are usually the last sign to arrive, not the first, which is why the quiet evidence matters more.

Work from the least obvious to the most. The order below is roughly the order these things appear as a population grows.

Droppings
The main evidence

Dark specks concentrated in corners, along cupboard joins, inside hinge pockets and behind the kickboard. They collect where the insects rest, so a heavy patch marks the shelter rather than the route.

Smear marks
Dark irregular streaks

Where surfaces stay damp, droppings and body oils get dragged into brown smears along the edges and undersides the insects run on. Common under a sink and around a dishwasher.

Egg cases
Small brown purses

Ridged capsules a few millimetres long, often empty and split along one edge. They get glued into sheltered spots or dropped where the insects shelter, and they survive long after whatever produced them.

Cast skins
Pale hollow shells

Young cockroaches shed their skin several times before adulthood, leaving papery pale copies of themselves behind. Finding them proves breeding is happening on site rather than nearby.

Ootheca

The hardened capsule a female cockroach produces to hold her eggs. State health information puts each batch at ten to forty eggs, with roughly thirty batches possible across a life that can stretch to twelve months.

The smell is the sign people describe worst and recognise instantly once they have met it. It is flat, oily and slightly sour, strongest when a cupboard door is opened after being shut all day, and it comes from the chemical signals the insects use to gather. A faint trace means a small population. A smell that hits you from the doorway means a large one.

<circle cx="12" cy="12" r="9"/>
Check with the torch low: hold it almost flat against the surface rather than shining straight down. What people call a nest is a harbourage: a tight dark space where numbers gather because it is warm, humid and close to food and water, marked out by droppings, cast skins, egg cases and the smell rather than by any structure.

That changes the search completely. You are not looking for a built object. You are looking for a concentration of evidence in a gap, and the heavier the concentration the closer you are.

Reading droppings to work out which cockroach you are dealing with.

What the droppings look like

What it points to

What that means

Fine black specks like ground pepper

The small indoor species

Breeding inside the building, in cupboards and appliances

Blunt ended cylinders with ridges along the sides

One of the large species

Usually breeding outdoors and coming in at night

Pointed at both ends, no ridges

Not a cockroach at all

Mouse droppings, which is a different job entirely

Dark smears rather than separate specks

Humid harbourage nearby

Look under the sink, behind the dishwasher, around the hot water unit

Specks high up on walls or ceilings

A species that shelters high and dry

Check picture frames, cornices and the tops of wardrobes

That third row saves a surprising number of wasted treatments. Work through it in order and tick things off.

Start under the sinkEmpty it. These are cold-blooded insects that prefer warm humid conditions and run at night, so a check at eleven at night with the lights going on suddenly shows you far more than the same cupboard at lunchtime. Put a few enclosed monitors along the junction of floor and wall first and read them in the morning if you would rather not stand in a dark kitchen.

Cardboard and paper stacks in a garage or pantry are shelter and food at the same time. A nocturnal insect out in the open during daylight is usually a sign the sheltered spaces are crowded and insects are being pushed out to compete for room. The identification is the valuable part. It decides whether the job is dozens of small bait placements inside your cupboards or drain and subfloor work outside, and getting that wrong is how people end up paying twice.

For the big dark species that keep appearing from drains, laundries and subfloors, the work is Australian and American cockroach control, which covers the drain run, the subfloor and the entry points rather than the kitchen bench. Tim carries Victorian licence No. 86488 and full insurance, attends each job himself, and covered work comes with a guarantee lasting three months over the areas he treated. To get it looked at, book a visit and bring your photos of the droppings with you.

Questions

Questions about cockroach evidence

<details class="fold">
What do cockroach droppings look like?

From the small indoor species they are fine black specks, much like ground pepper, concentrated in cupboard corners and hinge pockets. One large dark insect in a bathroom at night has very likely wandered in from a drain or the garden. A small tan one in a kitchen cupboard almost never travels alone, because that species lives and breeds indoors, so the one you saw is a sample.

</details>

<details class="fold">
What is the smell people talk about?

A flat, oily, slightly sour odour that comes from the chemical signals the insects use to gather together.
