One is a sudden cloud of winged insects at a window, which is where how to get rid of flying ants usually starts. The other is something large and fast in the lawn that stung hard enough to make a grown adult swear. Neither has much to do with the little trail crossing a kitchen bench, and neither responds to the bait you would use on one.

This guide takes both. It explains what a swarm actually is, which turns out to be reassuring once you know, then sets out why bull ants and jack jumpers are a safety job handled at the nest rather than a baiting job. It belongs with Tim's wider collection of household pest guides for Melbourne homes.

If you have been stung and the reaction is spreading beyond the spot, stop reading and get medical help. Everything else here will keep.

The swarm

Why do flying ants appear all at once?

Because it is a mating flight, not an infestation. Mature colonies produce winged males and young queens, hold them underground until the weather is right, then release them on the same warm humid day as every other colony in the area so they can breed with ants from somewhere else. There is no flying ant species. These are ordinary ants with wings on, for one afternoon.

The synchronisation is the part that unnerves people. Thousands of insects appear simultaneously across several streets, which looks like an event and feels like an invasion. It is neither. Colonies use shared weather cues, usually a still, muggy day following rain, so that every nest in the district launches together and the odds of outbreeding improve for all of them.

Nuptial flight

The single mating flight of an ant colony's winged males and young queens. The males die shortly afterwards, surviving queens drop to the ground, break off their own wings and attempt to start a new nest, and the great majority fail.

What it means

A mature nest

Only an established colony produces winged forms, so a swarm at your place says a nest nearby has been going for years.

How long

Hours, not weeks

The flight itself is over the same day. What is left on the windowsill the next morning is dead insects, not a problem.

What to spray

Nothing

Treating the air kills insects already on their way out of the picture and leaves the colony entirely untouched.

In Melbourne these flights cluster through the warmer months and most reliably on an evening when the air has gone heavy after a shower. Residents in different suburbs often report the same night. That is not coincidence and it is not a sign of anything unusual going on in your roof.

Two sensible questions follow. The first is whether they came from inside the building, and the answer is in where you saw them emerge: winged ants pouring out of a skirting, a light fitting or an architrave join point to a colony in the structure, while ants arriving at a window from outside do not. The second is whether they are ants at all, and that one deserves a careful look, because winged termites fly in the same conditions. The check takes seconds and is set out in the guide to telling ants from timber pests.

<circle cx="12" cy="12" r="9"/>
Harmless, and worth saying out loud: winged ants do not sting, do not bite and do not damage anything. They cannot feed, they are not interested in your kitchen, and almost all of them will be dead by tomorrow. Shutting the window is a complete response.

The stinging two

What makes bull ants and jack jumpers different?

They hunt alone and find their way by sight instead of following a scent trail, so there is no line to bait and nothing is carried back to the colony. They are also the only ants in a Melbourne garden that will come out at you, and the jack jumper sting is a recognised cause of severe allergic reaction in a small number of people.

Everything that makes the kitchen ant approach work is absent here. No trail means no placement point, no food sharing means nothing gets passed to the queen, and a solitary forager that spots you coming has no interest in a bait station on the path. That is the whole reason this is a nest job.

Why stinging ants are handled differently from the ants that come indoors.

Feature

Kitchen ants

Bull ants and jack jumpers

How they forage

In columns along a scent trail

Alone, hunting by eyesight

Food sharing

Constant, which is what carries bait home

Minimal, so bait reaches nobody

Response to you

Scatter away from disturbance

Come towards it and defend the nest

Where the work happens

Trails, voids and entry points

The nest entrance in the ground

Medical weight

None worth noting

Repeated stings, with an allergy risk

On the health side the wording matters, so here is the careful version. A normal sting gives sharp pain, redness and swelling at the spot, and it settles. A reaction that spreads well past the sting, brings on hives elsewhere, swells the face, lips or tongue, causes wheezing, dizziness or vomiting is a different thing entirely and needs emergency care. The Better Health Channel page on bite and sting reactions sets out those warning signs, anaphylaxis included, and what to do about each. Anyone who has reacted badly before should be carrying what their doctor prescribed, and should not be the person standing over the nest.

Vibration is the trigger. A mower, a whipper snipper, a shovel or heavy footsteps read as an attack on the nest, and the colony comes up out of the ground at the source. On a very small, shallow nest in open soil it does kill the part it reaches. On an established bull ant colony it reaches a fraction of the shaft, scalds the lawn, and produces a very angry colony standing between you and the back door. Judge it by the depth of the nest, not by the satisfaction of the gesture.

There is one ant left to mention for completeness. Winged ants streaming out of an internal wall in a house with a known damp problem are worth taking seriously, not because they will sting you, but because that colony is living in the structure. The guide on finding a nest when ants keep returning covers how to trace it.

The limit

When is a stinging ant nest worth handing over?

Hand it over when a sting has previously made somebody in the house seriously unwell, when the nest sits where children or pets play, when you cannot find the entrance, when there are several nests, or when the colony is under a path, a slab or the far side of a boundary fence. Those are not jobs to improvise in shorts and thongs.

Someone reacts to stings

This changes the whole approach. Treatment has to reach a shaft you cannot see, which needs the right product in the right place.

A good visit on this kind of job looks different from an ant treatment indoors. There should be a search rather than a spray, the species should be named, protective gear should come out for the nest work, you should be told how long to stay off the area afterwards, and a follow-up check should be offered because a deep colony occasionally needs a second application. If a technician walks straight to the lawn and starts spraying without looking for the entrance, the nest is still going to be there next weekend.

That work is bull ant and jack jumper control, which sets out how the nest is located, what is used at the entrance and how the follow-up check runs. Tim attends every job personally under Victorian licence number 86488, holds full insurance, and his three month guarantee covers the treated nest area, so renewed activity in that spot inside the window means he returns at no charge. To get it in the diary, request a quote and booking and mention where in the yard it is.

Questions

Questions about flying ants and stinging ants

<details class="fold">
Why have flying ants suddenly appeared at my window?

A mating flight has been triggered, usually by a still, humid evening after rain.
